The College of Education for Pure Sciences at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Basra discussed a doctoral thesis under the title (Study of Some Chemical Variables in Patients Affected by Anemia in Basra Governorate - Iraq). Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency is an inherited disease associated with the X chromosome. The number of samples collected from Abi Al-Khasib General Hospital was 175 samples divided into 100 samples for patients and 75 samples for healthy people (control group). The ages of both patients and healthy people ranged between (1-66 years). Life-chemo activities were estimated and investigated for GPx enzyme levels of antioxidants. , CAT, GST)) and non-enzymatic
(Vit A, Vit E), liver enzymes (GOT, GPT, ALP), malondialdehyde, uric acid, glutathione, bilirubin, albumin, lipid levels and some trace elements.
(Selenium, copper and zinc).
The thesis is aimed
Determination of the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and the blood level in patients and healthy subjects, as well as estimating the levels of some enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants represented by glutathione peroxidase, catalase, glutathione-transferase, glutamic-oxalaztic transferase, clotamic-pyruvic-alkaloid transferase, clotamic-pyruvic-alkaloid transferase. A and vitamin E, bilirubin, albumin, uric acid, glutathione, malondialdehyde and lipid levels represented by triglycerides, total cholesterol, ultra-low-density lipoproteins, low-density lipoproteins and high-density lipoproteins that have a biochemical association with G-6 deficiency -PD.
As well as assessing the levels of some trace elements represented by selenium, copper and zinc, which have a biochemical relationship with Favism, studying the possible linkages between different variables, and studying the biochemical effects represented by sex, age, marital status and smoking status on the severity of the G6PD enzyme deficiency disease.
The thesis concluded
Decreased levels of both enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants (GPx, CAT, and GST) and (vitamins E, A, and glutathione) in Favism patients compared to healthy subjects. As well as a decrease in the levels of some trace elements in patients compared with healthy people, as it was found that there was an increase in the levels of lipid peroxidation levels by increasing MDA in the blood and the level of total bilirubin in the blood serum in Favism patients compared with healthy people and there was no effect on the level of uric acid.
The thesis recommended
Estimation of some non-enzymatic antioxidants represented in vitamin K, vitamin C, and alpha-lipoic acid, as well as estimating levels of total proteins and estimating glucosamine and ceroplasmin some trace elements represented in (Fe, Mg, Mn, Co and Ca) in patients.
