A master’s thesis at the College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Basra, discussed the effect of CeO2 on some physiological and histological parameters in male laboratory mice.
The thesis presented by the researcher (Samaher Sabri Hamid) included an introduction to nanotechnology and nanoparticles, their properties and applications. Nanoparticles are particles or atoms ranging in diameter from one nanometer to a few tens of nanometers. In nanotechnology, nanomaterials play a vital role in various fields of science such as chemistry, physics and materials science as a major component of nanomaterials, and over the past few years great efforts have been made to use nanoparticles to develop new applications in several fields.
The thesis aimed to study the effect of cerium oxide on some physiological parameters of white laboratory mice, and discussed the histological changes caused by cerium oxide in some organs of mice lung, liver, kidney and testes.
The current study concluded that exposure to cerium oxide leads to a decrease in the average body weight of laboratory mice after (15-30) days after injection. Cerium oxide caused a significant decrease in the blood parameters of male laboratory rats at the two given doses. Cerium oxide also led to impaired liver and kidney function and affected lipid levels and caused an increase in the level of total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein 15-30 days after injection in the group of mice injected with a high dose of 750 mcg / ml. Cerium had an effect on (antioxidants), as it led to a decrease in the level of catalase enzyme after 15 days of injection with the high dose of 750 mcg/ml and the low dose of 500 µg/ml after 30 days of injection. The results of our study also showed a significant difference in the level of testosterone after 15: 30 days in mice treated with a low dose of 500 μg / ml of cerium oxide. And it appeared cerium oxide affected the tissues of the liver, spleen, kidneys and lungs, which is reflected on the functions of these vital organs.
