The Urban Dominance in Qurna District :A Study in Urban Geography

The current study aims at exposing the extent of the urban dominance in Qurna city on other surrounding urban centers through focusing on the reasons of such dominance and the factors that ensued it in addition to the results obtainedl
The study is composed of four chpters . The first one is concerned with traing the historical development of land employment through the historical stages of Quran district .The city passed four morphological stages , and during every stage the land expanded producing a number of functions that put it in control over the other adjacent locations. The process of control made it possess a special shape. Chapter two deals with the functional part of the city in question which highlights the situation of this structure through recognizing the resulted changes in every structural function in orderto find out the most important functions that made the city the center of the urban surrounding interests . Chapter three presents the quantitative analysis of the urban dominance in Qurna through the application of some urban indicators of dominance over the adjacent urban areas such as the use of M.Jeffersons first rank law , the rule of rank and size by George Zeev ,Priority indicators , urban dominance indicator,and the application of urban balance to recognize the size of the disordered balance for the web of the urban areas and to clarify the degree of the dominance in Qurna. Chapter four is about the prompts and reasons that characterized Quran district and its dominance over other urban centers which surround it. The study shows the negative effects on the first city , its dominance , at the level of size , and functions in relation to the scrambling and crowding over the city services .The study concluded that the urban system in Qurna district can be characterized by the process of dominance through the observation of overcrowding with a high degree of population and the control of this city over the humamn prospect of life including urban centers and the surrounding ones . Further, the study shows the placing of all economic activities and the expansion of the scope of services in Qurna .This matter makes the city a center of urban attraction .The a bsence of comprehensive development , with all its spatial dimensions among the adjacent surreounding urban centers in the city , Led to a disorder in balance among these centers.
