Board research at the College of Medicine, University of Basra discussed the relationship between biotin intake and thyroid hormone testing results and thyroid antibody analysis in healthy adults. The research presented by student Ola Abbas Zaki aims to assess whether consuming 10 mg of biotin every day for a short period could interfere with biotin immunoassays and cause abnormal results of thyroid function tests in healthy adults and compare the results with non-biotin immunoassays.
The research concluded that taking 10 mg of biotin every day for a short period was associated with a potentially significant interference in an immunoassay using the streptavidin biotin regimen, whereby taking biotin causes a false increase in competitive immunoassays and causes a false decrease in non-competitive immune analyzes.
