A master’s thesis in the College of Education for Pure Sciences, Department of Chemistry, University of Basra, discussed (studying the levels of some enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in patients with sickle cell anemia in Basra Governorate - Iraq).

Sickle cell disease is one of the genetic diseases resulting from an imbalance in the blood protein (hemoglobin) and leads to a change in the shape of red blood cells. This study was conducted in Al-Mawani Teaching Hospital in Basra Governorate-Iraq for 45 patients with sickle cell anemia (20 males and 25 females) and the number of healthy people (control group) was 50 (22 males and 28 females). The levels of enzymatic antioxidants (glutamic-oxaloacetic transferase, glutamic pyruvic transferase and alkaline phosphatase) and non-enzymatic antioxidants (triglycerides, total cholesterol, copper and zinc) were measured. The levels of all biochemical variables were measured depending on the factors of age, gender, family history and marital status. Significant differences were recorded in ALP, GPT, GOT enzymes, triglycerides, total cholesterol, copper and zinc.

Estimation of the levels of some enzymes such as aspartate transaminase, glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase and alkaline phosphatase that have a biochemical relationship with sickle cell anemia, and the estimation of the levels of non-enzymatic antioxidants such as triglycerides and total cholesterol that have a biochemical association with sickle cell anemia. Estimation of some trace elements represented by copper and zinc, which have a biochemical association with sickle cell disease. And the relationship of variables represented by gender, age, marital status and family history status on enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants in sickle cell disease patients.
