A master thesis defense at the Department of Chemistry, college of science has discussed the preparation of new IPNs polymers from waste polyethylene and polycarbonates.
The main objective of this research is to exploit some of those wastes to produce other materials ,where the polystyrene waste used in manufacture of food preserves and polycarbonate used in manufacture of CDs as raw materials in our current study ,and they were converted into sulfonated polymers using sulfuric acid as sulphonating agent . the degree of sulphonation of these polymers was calculated by conducting a series of experiments, the change caused the concentration of acid and time , it was also noted that the degree of sulphonation increases with increase of acid concentration and time . it was also noted that the degree of sulphonation of SPS reach 65%, while of SPC it to 35%.
The researcher has indicated that the newly prepared polymers from plastic wastes were found to be thermally stable and have a very unique light emitting characteristics, and can be used as polymeric LED.
