A master's thesis in the College of Engineering at the University of Basrah discussing (the optimal design of wire-reinforced bridges under seismic loads)
The thesis presented by the student Nada Nouri Nasser dealt with the study of improvement using three cases of design variables. The first case is concerned with the distances between the wires on the towers, the second case considering the diameters of the wires, the third case takes the depth of the tower section as a design variable. In all cases, the displacement of the upper point of the tower in three directions is the objective function.
In the first case which is concerned with the distance between wires, when using the multiple optimization genetic algorithm objectives, the best model that gives the least displacement is when the spacing between wires is at the top from the tower small while increasing to a high value between the last two wires.
The aim of the thesis is to improve bridge designs to obtain an optimal design so that it leads to obtaining a model that is less expensive or is under less stress or displacement.
The thesis concluded that if the depth is less by 11%, it will give a better result (minimum displacement) in the first three modes and seismic loads in the x direction, while when it increases by 45%, it gives a better result under the gravitational load and when the earthquake is shed in the y direction.
