Department of Biology, College of Science, University of Basrah had organized the seminar entitled (Nosocomial infections in burn patients) by the PhD student Hanan Ali Abd Al kareem
The seminar was about the most bacterial infection in burn patients. A burn is a thermal injury caused by chemical, electrical and physical agents. Thermal injury destroys the skin, the natural barrier to the external environment. Nosocomial infections, also called health-care-associated or hospital-acquired infections, are a subset of infectious diseases acquired in a health-care facility. To be considered nosocomial, the infection cannot be present at admission; rather, it must develop at least 48 hours after admission. As a result, the burned area is prone to infection and colonized by microorganisms, Since, burned skin provides a fertile media for bacterial growth and part of the trauma response leads to immune suppression. In addition, most of burn patients may stay longer period at hospital than other patients These infections can lead to serious problems like sepsis and even death. The bacterial infection recorded in burn patients were due to: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baummanni, Escherichia coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterococcus.
