The College of Education for Pure Sciences, Department of Chemistry, University of Basra, discussed a master’s thesis on (a thermodynamic and kinetic study of the adsorption of some medicinal drugs from their aqueous solutions)
The message presented by the researcher (Nizar Shati Noer) included the preparation of activated carbon from an inexpensive and environmentally friendly raw material, which is (Ziziphus spina-christi). Then the prepared activated carbon was identified by means of different microscopes and techniques, such as (FT-IR, SEM, EDX, X-RD). Some physical properties of the prepared activated carbon were studied, as they found the moisture content (1.57%), ash (3.21%) and density (0.60). g/cm3) in addition to measuring the acidity function and it was (7.2). The efficiency of the prepared activated carbon in the adsorption of the studied drugs from their aqueous solutions was also studied, in order to explore the ability of the prepared adsorbent to treat drug poisoning cases. Where the variables affecting the adsorption capacity were studied, represented by studying the effect of equilibrium time, initial concentration, amount of adsorbent, temperature and acidity function of the drugs under study.
The study concluded:
Activated carbon prepared from vegetable raw materials (Sidr buckthorn kernels) (Ziziphus spina-christi) has a high adsorption efficiency for the drugs under study because it has a high surface area and large pores, and this was confirmed by the SEM result.
The Frendelch isotherm model gave the best applicability to the studied system, and to a lesser extent, the Lankmeyer isotherm when applied to practical adsorption data in all studied cases.
The results of the kinetic study showed that the adsorption system is subject to a pseudo-second-order equation according to the values of the correlation coefficients (R2) for the drugs under study.
Through the thermodynamic studies that were conducted, as well as other studies that affect the determination of the adsorption efficiency and the nature of the effect of concentration, temperature, and others, the adsorption process of the drugs under study is of a physical nature.
Recommendations:
A study of the use of prepared activated carbon in industrial applications due to the ease of production and low cost.
A study of some biochemical factors to study the effect of activated carbon in reducing the damages of drug poisoning by the (in vivo) method.
Determining the actual appropriate dose of the prepared adsorbent for the treatment of drug poisoning cases.
Conducting a theoretical study using programs designed for this purpose, to perform some calculations related to the geometric dimensions and electronic densities as well as the energies of the molecule to assess their effect on the adsorption efficiency of the drugs under study as well as to consider the possibility of determining the active sites through which the adsorbed molecules are attached to the surface of activated carbon, which are difficult to determine Through laboratory and practical studies, unless
It uses technically developed devices prepared for this purpose. It is also possible through theoretical calculations to predict the methods of preparing activated carbon
