Under the auspices of the University of Basrah and the General Company for Ports of Iraq, the activities of the first scientific conference for the Great Port of Faw were launched with a large presence of official and civil institutions and local and international figures and will continue for two days.
The conference included the participation of researchers from Arab and international countries who will present several studies specialized in the importance of the port and its role in global trade.
The President of Basrah University, Dr. Saad Shaheen Hammadi, stated, "The interest in and completion of the Faw port project is one of the most effective solutions to rid the Iraqi economy of its rentier characteristic, as well as its contribution to absorbing unemployment through the diversification of the industrial facility that will be attached to the port. The port will also contribute to providing the shortest way to connect the world, especially trading with China, which will pass through Iraq to Turkey and Europe."
Shaheen added, "The holding of the conference in itself represents the university's openness to the vital issues that serve the Iraqi economy, which provided a lot of necessary data for researchers in various specializations and will contribute to identifying the reality of the project, its achievements and the most important problems facing it, and then addressing all obstacles".
The Director-General of the General Company for Iraqi Ports, Engineer Farhan Al-Fartousi, indicated that the ports of Iraq and the University of Basrah are partners in all scientific activities that contribute to the progress of the country forward, indicating that the great port of Faw is a project and a dream of the Iraqis, which has become a reality today.
It is worth mentioning that the University of Basrah always seeks to pay attention to all economic and service activities that serve our beloved country in general and Basrah in particular, as it has held many seminars and specialized workshops to discuss and explain many laws and projects, most notably the Faw port project, which is of strategic importance to the Iraqi economy to diversify its income sources and getting rid of the rentier characteristic by relying on one source of income (export of crude oil), which is exposed from time to time to shocks that negatively affects the revenues achieved by the state and thus are reflected in the reduction of public spending in terms of consumption and investment, as well as borrowing from the inside and from international institutions or international banks that which drained large sums of federal budgets through public debt service, which negatively affected development projects.
