
The College of Dentistry University of Basrah and the Continuous Education Unit held a scientific lecture under the title "Challenge in hiatus hernia surgery and effect of gastosophageal reflux disorder on oral cavity" which was delivered by Assistant. Professor Dr. Asaad Mohammed Kadhim.
GERD is disorder of lower esophageal sphincter muscles and it may be mild moderate or severe most cases are usually mild and can be treated by living conservatively and making some healthier lifestyle changes. And the oral changes that occur due to GERD range from dental caries to severe Periodental (gum) changes and the dentist here should be more oriented towards the causes of oral changes.
The objective of the lecture is to give a brief overview about the disease and touching on the dentists themselves whether they can tell the difference between the patients that suffer from GERD which in turn causes the oral changes, as well as, treating the main cause after referring the patient to specialists after discovering it as a major cause of teeth caries.
At the end of the lecture, the lecturer listened to the most important wanderings, questions and recommendations, including how the dentist can identify this disease.
? Is there any future danger from it
When the patient has a hiatal hernia operation, the changes under the operation disappear quickly. Does the patient need a chronic permeant treatment?
