The research team at the College of Science at the University of Basrah, consisting of Prof. Abdullah Humoud Al-Saadoun, Dr. Adnan Issa Al-Badran and Dr. Najwa Muhammad Jamil, obtained a patent for isolating the compound Killer toxin isolated from the secondary metabolite extract of the two strains Torulaspora delbrueckii and Wickerhamomyces anomalus, which was recorded for the first time at the level of Iraq and included in the global gene bank under the name Torulaspora delbrueckii and Wickerhamomyces anomalus.
The patent included the use of some advanced techniques in chemical diagnosis of the compound isolated from the yeast extract, as a number of life tests were conducted on the diagnosed compound, such as anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity, as the compound showed varying inhibitory activity against the tested pathogenic bacteria strains and showed high anti-fungal activity against a number of teasts and fungi isolated from various fungal infections.
