Under the supervision of the Head of the Department of Life Sciences at the College of Science, University of Basra, the fourth stage students, who numbered 156 students for each of the morning and evening studies (118 students for morning studies and 38 students for evening studies), conducted a field visit in the form of a scientific trip to the Physics Department \ Nanotechnology Laboratory in the College of Science, and that On Tuesday, 11/1/2022, under the supervision of Dr. Intisar Jamil Hamad and with the assistance of Dr. Esraa Abdul Razzaq Hamid.
Dr. Intisar Jamil, professor of nanotechnology in the Department of Life Sciences, said that the visit was made in order to develop the scientific level of the student of this course by reviewing the most important devices used in the manufacture and diagnosis of nanomaterials, which are taught within the nanotechnology course in the Department of Life Sciences. Where the delegation (consisting of Dr. Intisar, Dr. Isra and students of the nanotechnology course) visited the scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) room, and the delegation toured the Nanotechnology Laboratory, which is the first at the University of Basra in terms of the number and type of devices and equipment used.
Dr. Intisar indicated that the SEM electron microscope has been clarified, as it is one of the most important devices that have a major role in the emergence and development of nanotechnology, which is used in diagnosing all types of manufactured nanomaterials, and is considered one of the best devices in Iraq. This device is currently used for imaging and diagnosis of nanomaterials manufactured by researchers from all universities and research centers in Iraq.
The delegation, with the help of Prof. Dr. Mazen Awni (laborator) and Dr. Farrakhan, was also briefed on all the other devices in the lab, such as the Laser ablation, Thermal evaporator and Ultrasound, which are used in the manufacture of various materials and nanoparticles, with an explanation of the working methods of each device. It was also known how to determine the efficiency of manufactured nanomaterials such as measuring their size, distribution and surface charge using the Zetasizer and measuring their physical and optical properties such as Time-Resolved Emission spectra (TRES) to measure life time, which is one of the very advanced devices used in specific biological applications.
Dr. Intisar stated that the purpose of the visit is to inform the students about these devices, equipment and tools used in manufacturing, diagnosing and measuring the effectiveness and efficiency of various nanomaterials, which would raise the scientific level of the student of the Department of Life Sciences, since the manufactured nanomaterials which are studied within the nanotechnology course are used in An infinite large number of different biological and medical applications, sometimes as an alternative to many of them, in order to achieve the desired goal, which is the development of the scientific process.
Dr. Intisar also indicated that the presence of such devices would develop scientific research in general in Iraq to keep pace with global scientific research, which is what Basra University always aims for, especially in the field of nanoscience, which is a multidisciplinary science that combines all sciences in a new and rapidly developing scientific field due to For its wide range of biological, medical and other applications.
