A research team at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Basrah University, consisting of Dr. Wasfi Aboud Al-Masoudi and Dr. Rana Adnan Fayez, obtained a patent for preparing new (benzimidazole) derivatives as anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.
The patent included the preparation of a number of (benzimidazole) compounds for the first time, which was characterized by the availability of raw materials for preparation, relatively cheap and easiness of preparation, which makes the product of good economic feasibility. The new compounds were diagnosed and the analyzes and the validity of their chemical compositions was proved. The compounds also showed a higher biological activity than gentamicin against a number of types of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as against types of fungi compared to Nystatin. Thus, the prepared compounds are considered to have a wide range as anti-microbials to different types of microbes.
