The Department of chemistry at the college of Science organized a seminar entitled: Removal of some toxic organic dyes by copoly ( DMAEMA-AMPS) hydrogels for water treatment. The seminar was presented by the M. SC stdent Duha Ra`ad Abdulwahab.
The scientist explained that there are many sources that contribute to water pollution, and the most prominent of these sources is industrial waste, and one of these wastes is dyes, as the presence of these dyes poses a serious environmental problem, This study relies on the use of hydrogel copolymers as adsorbent materials to remove harmful dyes from their aqueous solutions.
The study included the preparation of ten copolymer gels from di methyl amino methacrylate and 2- acryl amido- methyl propane -1- sulfonic acid with crosslinking agent methylene -bis acrylamide by redox polymerization. The gel copolymers were diagnosed by studying their swelling ratio and studying the morphology of the surfaces of these hydrogels using scanning electron microscope, also, the XRD pattern, the porosity shape and relative surface area were studied using BET analysis and the thermal properties were also studied through DSC and TGA . Experiments were carried out to study the adsorption system of gel copolymers prepared for the removal of anionic and cationic dyes, Congo red and methylene blue to determine the effectiveness of these surfaces and the possibilty of using them as an adsorbent for decontamination of dyes.
