The dean of the College of Pharmacy, Prof. Falah Hassan Shari, obtained a certificate of participation in the international workshop (Management of Thyroiditis) organized by the Russian Pharma courses platform, an independent online educational platform for health care professionals in the Middle East and North Africa region.
The workshop included a lecture on the thyroid gland, which is responsible for metabolism in the body. The thyroid gland works through the hormones it secretes, thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). In order for the thyroid gland to produce these hormones, it needs iodine, the element found in water and food. And when the gland is inactive in this case, it is not active enough and produces a small amount of a specific hormone or several hormones that supervise and affect the rate of metabolism.
When cells work harder, body systems work at a faster pace, and a lack of thyroid hormones leads to slower body functions and this is reflected in a decrease in the stimulation of almost all tissues in the body to produce proteins, and a decrease in the amount of oxygen used by cells.
The workshop also discussed the symptoms of hypothyroidism, the causes of hypothyroidism, and the diagnosis and treatment of hypothyroidism
