The teaching staff at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah, Assistant Professor Dr. Labid Abdullah Najm, was chosen as a member of the discussion committee for the master’s thesis (Study of the prevalence, diagnosis and virulence of fungal infections acquired in Basrah governorate hospitals) for the student Fouad Kazem Obaid in the College of Science at the University of Basrah.
The thesis addressed the general definition of hospital-acquired infections, as hospitals represent an environment rich in many pathogenic microorganisms or that can turn into a pathogen, including fungi.
The study also showed the methods of transmission of fungal infection to patients and the factors that must be provided for their occurrence, as well as identifying the most important and most common pathogenic fungi in hospitals, and the most important factors of virulence The methods of diagnosis and determining the virulence of the diagnosed pathogens and the most important antifungals used to treat these cases were also explained.
The study concluded that fungi is an important factor in the occurrence of hospital-acquired infections, and the study recommended increasing the interest of health institutions in fungal infections, using their own diagnostic methods, conducting drug sensitivity tests, and choosing the appropriate antifungal for infection.
