On Thursday morning, 17/3/2022, a master’s thesis, entitled (Acts of Influence for Directive Verbs in the Qur’anic Discourse), was discussed in the Department of Arabic Language at the College of Arts / University of Basrah.
The thesis presented by the student Farouk Hafez Abdullah included the introduction and discussed the theory of speech and discourse verbs. The first chapter included the concept of the affective act and its relations. The second chapter dealt with directive acts between the power of achievement and the intent to influence and the third chapter discussed the affective act and its types and patterns of achievement.
The thesis aims to identify the affective act that represents the results of directive actions, which are represented in three types intended by the speaker: executive, refrain, and informational.
The thesis concluded that the affective intent is achieved with the performance act of the speaker, as it is associated with the achievement, and it is the means in understanding the achievement of the addressee and the occurrence of the affective act with him. The thesis also concluded that the actions of influence resulting from directive actions are achieved in three main patterns, namely, the corresponding verification, the contrary verification, and the suspended verification, which in turn is divided into two main types, which are the perceptual act and the procedural act.
The thesis recommended paying attention to the affective actions resulting from speech acts according to Searle's classification, as they deserve study, which in turn reveals the strength of the achievement achieved by the speaker and his effective intent achieved by the addressee.
