A scientific team at the Marine Science Center at the University of Basrah planted mangroves in Khor Al-Zubair. The initiative conducted with the support and direct guidance of the Director General of the Marine Science Center, Prof. Dr. Nuri Abdul-Nabi Nasser, in order to preserve the Iraqi coasts.
Planting mangroves in the coasts is considered a unique experience in Iraq and was done in the banks of the Shatt al-Arab, Khor al-Zubayr, and Shatt al-Basra, and the next destination is the great port of Faw after agreement with the Director General of the Iraqi Ports Company.
It is worth mentioning that mangroves act as a vegetative cover that protects the coasts from erosion as well as providing a shelter for fish and other organisms as a plant resistant to saline and organic pollution in addition to its ability to adapt to high temperatures.
