The College of Education for Human Sciences at the University of Basra/Continuing Education Unit, in cooperation with the Psychological Counseling Unit and the Department of Educational and Psychological Sciences, organized a workshop on “The Psychology of Fasting and Study Skills in Ramadan”
The workshop aimed to enlighten students about the psychological, health, social and economic dimensions of fasting in the month of Ramadan
The workshop that I attended included (Professor Dr. Batoul Ghaleb Al-Nahi)
(Fasting develops a person’s ability to self-control, trains him to leave bad habits, and gives him the opportunity to acquire new controls in behavior that reflect positively on his personality as a human being and on the society to which he belongs. Saying that fasting in its Islamic connotation combines the psychological, cognitive dimension with the physical dimension, and this is the essence of any effective behavioral approach. In fact, even in the material aspect of fasting, the modification of consumption behavior does not come only through biological abstinence, but rather the person’s vision must be modified to the meaning of life itself.
The lecture discussed the mechanics of studying in Ramadan and that the best time for studying in Ramadan is in the middle of the night from 9-12, away from the iftar period and its surrounding times of worship or media temptations.
The workshop recommended that the student organize his time between studying and recreation, and that the efficient use of time is one of the important factors for achievement in the month of Ramadan, that the study hours are mostly in the evening, that the student program his mind in a positive way and avoid negative thoughts, and that the student gets used to sleeping early in the month of Ramadan. So that he can continue his next day successfully
Too much sleep causes drowsiness and lack of focus
Excessive staying up makes him tired and tired, and then weakens his comprehension and concentration
Note that the aim of holding the workshop is to prepare our dear students for psychological, spiritual and academic readiness in the blessed month of Ramadan. It is part of the development counseling program for college students prepared by the Psychological Counseling Unit for its students during the current academic year.
