PhD thesis at the College of Engineering at the University of Basrah discussing (Modeling of Sediment Transport in Khor Al Zubair Port)
The thesis submitted by the student Ahmed Odeh Dakhil dealt with the development of a numerical model to simulate the transport of sediments in the port of Khor Al Zubair, south Iraq, through the application of the MIKE 21 Flow Model FM developed by the Institute. The Danish hydraulic model has the ability to simulate a hydrodynamic model combined with a mud transport model.
The model works with an unstructured grid of triangles and quadrilaterals of different sizes Field and experimental data were provided during three periods of field and laboratory measurements For the calibration and verification process in the first period, three devices were installed in different places to measure the water level during the second and third periods, data related to the hydraulic and sedimentary properties of the water were collected
The thesis aims to model the movement of sediments in the port of Khor Al Zubair to maintain the navigation forces and safe and practical ports
The thesis concluded examining six selected scenarios with possible corrective treatments to reduce sedimentation in Khor Al Zubair port. Most of the scenarios have been proven successful, where the annual sedimentation rate can be reduced by up to 5-40%, except for the scenario of creating a flow through drilling a channel parallel to the port that did not succeed in reducing sedimentation.
