The College of Education for Human Sciences at the University of Basrah organized a symposium on the importance of teaching literature in developing language skills at the university level and the mechanisms of working on these skills for the instructor and the student.
The symposium included methods of teaching literature, especially fiction, by proceeding in three tracks focusing on developing listening and speaking, reading and writing, and critical thinking, as well as how the student studies the literary material and what are the ways to develop his language skills through it.
The symposium recommended using the critical essay writing mechanism because of its importance in developing critical thinking and writing skill and their connection together to reach the development of other language skills, respectively.
