The College of Law at the University of Basrah organized a symposium on the position of the Iraqi legislator and judiciary on the crime of electronic extortion.
The symposium was attended by the researcher Baqir Ghazi Hanoun, during which he explained that societies are facing a serious challenge as a result of the Internet revolution, which is developing day after day, as electronic extortion has become one of the products of that revolution, and it may be the most common of them, especially since it does not require much tools or effort. All that the blackmailer needs is a picture, or an audio recording, or what combines the two in the form of a video recording, or even information, on one of the social networking websites (Facebook, Viber, Twitter, ...) to weave after that the threads of his crime that he planned with which he intended to achieve certain goals, which in most cases are to achieve material or moral gain, or to engage in a forbidden sexual relationship.
It is worth mentioning that this exposes the victims of electronic blackmail to dangerous conditions, represented by their fear of scandal, and depression, to the point that some of them may end their lives by suicide.
