The College of Education for Human Sciences - University of Basra - Department of Geography organized the third (virtual) international scientific conference entitled (Geography and Contemporary Challenges).
The conference aimed to shed light on the importance of geography in studying contemporary issues facing society, as well as activating the scientific research movement and exchanging experiences and knowledge among researchers, diagnosing and addressing environmental problems to achieve sustainable development goals, while assisting decision makers in correct scientific development planning.
The conference started with its axes, according to which the research participating in it was built according to, and the first axis was about the impact of climate on sustainable development in Iraq, and the second axis showed the geomorphological risks and the effects resulting from them, and the third axis was about the problems of water resources, and the fourth axis talked about geography The economic and its role in sustainable development, and between the fifth axis sustainable urban development, and the sixth axis talked about the impact of water and food security on sustainable development, and the seventh and final axis was about population and development problems.
The conference concluded with a set of recommendations, the most important of which was to highlight the role of the geography and the geographer in addressing the problems of the natural environment. Sustainable development in all areas of contemporary life, as well as finding ways of scientific cooperation between geographers, state institutions and civil society institutions; In the service of the human being and activating the movement of scientific research and exchanging experiences between researchers at the level of the Arab world and neighboring countries, the international conference also recommended activating the role of the geographer and involving him in the highest administrative authority at the level of cities and the region, with the need for research teams to show the problems that the environment suffers from and an attempt to propose scientific methods As a solution to these problems, one of the recommendations is the necessity of urging the relevant institutions to participate in future conferences to create common resources in order to face the challenges.
