The University of Basrah organized a specialized seminar titled the phenomenon of salt wedge penetration in the Shatt al-Arab stream, its effects, challenges and solutions.
The symposium dealt with the damages, challenges and solutions to this phenomenon on the water situation of the governorate by specialists and those interested in this regard. The consultant of the Italian company Technacal, Alessandro reviewed through his lecture similar cases in some countries of the world of the phenomenon of salt water intrusion into the upper estuaries of rivers.
Dr. Muhammad Nasser Fares also stressed that the university’s interest in the problems facing the water sector stems from its sense of shared responsibility in facing challenges and obstacles and finding appropriate solutions to them in order to secure water security for the governorate in light of the water scarcity crisis facing Iraq in general and Basra in particular.
It is worth mentioning that the university is also working to prepare an integrated roadmap to confront the water crisis, including seawater desalination projects using modern technologies with low operational costs as a future strategy to secure water security for the governorate.
