The Department of Geology at the College of Science discussed a master's thesis entitled (Depositional Environment and Petrophysical Characteristics of the Formation of the Hole, in the Nahr Omar Field in Southern Iraq). Researcher Kawthar Iyad Hassan's thesis aims to identify the mineral heterogeneity and the type of sediments and determine the sedimentary environment of the overlapping layers in the Lower Knight Formation (Fatha).
The study included data collection of well probes and core for the formation of the hole and its preparation for sedimentary and mineral studies. The study of sediment types, examination of evaporites, marl, limestone, clay rock, and dolomite under the polarizing microscope and electron microscope, identifying and diagnosing the sedimentary environment of the sedimentary layers in the formation.
The results concluded that this formation is characterized by a wide sedimentary extension and a large mineral and facies heterogeneity, where the thickness of the formation reaches 400 meters in southern Iraq. anhydrite rocks that alternate with marl and clays; While the lower part of the formation consists of limestone rocks containing shells in addition to the dolomitic rocks intertwined with layers of sandstone and successive with insulating layers of shale and anhydrite.
