The Department of Geology at the College of Science discussed a master's thesis entitled (Sedimentary Specifications of the Saadi Formation in West Qurna Field, Southern Iraq). Researcher Adyan Ali Mizban's thesis aims to explain and identify rock facies and identify the sedimentary environment of the formation. The study was conducted in three stages. The first stage included field work by collecting previous studies, data and modeling accurately for the study wells, with 35 core samples from 5 wells. Then the laboratory work, which included the preparation and study of rock slides, in addition to X-ray analyzes to determine the mineral, while the office work included analyzing and interpreting probes using the GeoLock program, drawing a contour map and matching between wells in the Petrol program.
The results concluded that the lower part of the Saadi formation is a reservoir of oil, but it is considered a narrow and weak reservoir because it is characterized by medium porosity and low permeability, due to the fact that most of the pores are not connected. As for the formation environment, the formation is deposited within the geological model of ram carbonite, which extends from the middle to the shallow, and this reflects the system of sedimentation of shallow upwards, which means the sediments were affected by the retreat of the sea.
