A master’s thesis at the College of Engineering at the University of Basrah researched (behavior and design of shear walls that are axially loaded and contain slots) by the student “Amert Saleh Kawush”
The thesis dealt with the study of the structural behavior of axially loaded shear walls that contain slots. The study included two parts. The first part is the laboratory work, which includes testing twenty-six models of reinforced shear walls containing slots. Self-compacting concrete was used to pour all the models. In the second part, the models were analyzed. Laboratory tested using finite element theory, non-linear three-dimensional analysis
The variables that were taken into consideration in this study are: the thickness of the shear wall, the size of the holes and the angle of deflection of the holes. The samples were divided into five groups according to these variables, the ANSYS V.16.1 program was adopted.
The practical results showed that the thickness of the shear walls has a great effect on the structural behavior, especially in the shear walls that contain openings. The maximum reaches 90% in the models containing the holes, a very good agreement was obtained between the experimental and theoretical results obtained from the program. It was also noted that the behavior of the cracks obtained from the program is very similar to the behavior of the cracks that were observed in the scientific models.
