The College of Science at the University of Basrah discussed a higher diploma research titled (Estimation of Heavy Metals in Fish Species Collected from Local Markets in Basra Governorate).
The research of the student, Mortada Hamid Khafeef, included identifying the concentrations of heavy metals in selected species of fish and the effect of these elements on human health.
The research aims to identify edible species, and the study showed that canned fish are the most susceptible to contamination.
The research recommended the necessity of spreading environmental awareness, periodic monitoring of imported fish, and using the correct method for transporting, storing and preserving fish.
