A scientific study at the College of Science at the University of Basrah, prepared by Dr. Maytham Abdullah Ghali in partnership with researcher Rehab Nasser Younes, Dr. Adel Al-Handal and Dr. Angela Wolf from the Swedish University of Gothenburg, recorded a new global species of diatomaceous algae in the Shatt Al-Arab.
The study, which was published in the "Cryptogamie, Algologie" journal, classified within Scopus containers Q2 showed that the new species, which was called "Synedropsis abuflosensis", grows attached to the muddy sediments in the Shatt al-Arab.
The study included the collection of sediment samples from the eastern side of the Shatt al-Arab in the Abu Flos region for the period from June to August 2020, and modern sources were adopted for classification and advanced optical and electronic microscopy imaging were used.
