A scientific study at the College of Science at the University of Basrah, prepared by Dr. Maytham Abdullah Ghali in cooperation with Dr. Daoud Salman Abdullah, at the Marine Sciences Center at the University of Basrah, recorded five types of diatomaceous algae in Khor Al-Zubair.
The study, which was published in the "Basrah Journal of Agricultural Sciences", classified within Scopus containers, showed that these diatoms are the first of their kind in the region and were not previously recorded in Khor Al Zubair.
The study included collecting samples of clay, rocks, wood and iron sediments submerged in water on a seasonal basis during the year 2020.
It is worth mentioning that modern sources were adopted for classification and the use of advanced optical and electron microscopy imaging.
The results of the study concluded that the four new species are recorded for the first time in Khor Al-Zubair, while the fifth species is recorded for the first time in Iraq.
