Master’s thesis in the Department of English Language, College of Education, the University of Basra under the title (A Phonosemantic Study of Some Selected Hollywood Movies’ Titles) done by Hamza Ajeel Alsalihy.
The thesis discussed the role that sounds in English language play in the reflection of the meaning of the words (titles) that these sounds are constructed.
The thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter one deals with the problem of the study, the hypothesis and the objectives of the study. The theoretical background items are discussed in chapter two. Chapter three shows the theory which is used as a model in this study. The fourth chapter is the practical one where movies’ titles are divided into four genres; the historical epic, the action, the comic and the romantic movies’ titles. The last chapter provides the results of the study.
The study reveals that the consonant and the vowel sounds are meaning-bearing elements and reflect feelings. The historical epic and the action movies’ titles are constructed from sounds that refer to action, aggression and hatefulness. Whereas the romantic and the comic movies’ titles are formulated from sounds associated with music and softness.
