The University of Basrah has opened a new building for the internal student departments in the Bab Al-Zubair colleges complex, with a capacity of (500) students divided into (75) furnished rooms distributed among four double-storey suites designated to receive students of the medical group (Medicine - Al-Zahraa Medicine - Dentistry - pharmacy - Nursing).
Regarding the purpose and circumstances of establishing this department and the funding body, the university president, Prof. Saad Shaheen Hammadi, said, “Today, Basrah University is inaugurating the ninth internal department, which is equal and comparable to another department for female students that was opened last year in the same complex, and this new construction will ease us with the large numbers of students in the remaining eight departments.
The structure of this project was financed by the Fund to Support the Reconstruction and Projects of the Basra local government, but due to circumstances related to poor funding, we decided to complete the project at the expense of the university after obtaining the approval of the Ministries of Planning and Higher Education in a record time that took (60) days during the summer vacation as the school year is around the corner.
It included completing it with partitions, construction, electrical installations, furniture and furnishings from beds, wardrobes, kitchens, cooling systems, sanitary toilets, shower rooms, and safety and emergency systems to avoid accidents.”
Shaheen added - With God’s help, we have completed the logistical matters related to the department’s readiness to receive students from preparing the administrative and service staff in terms of management, supervision and maintenance. We have equipped the department with a diesel generator to avoid power outages and provide a comfortable and suitable atmosphere for the purposes of study and residence for long periods.
It is worth mentioning that the Directorate of Internal Departments at the University of Basrah annually receives approximately (5,000) male and female students, who are accommodated in prepared conditions characterized by the availability and maintenance of services throughout the academic year. The students' original residential areas vary from governorates adjacent to Basra, as well as from the central Euphrates governorates, districts and outlying areas of the city.
