The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah organized a workshop on managing and operating microbiological containment laboratories, in the presence of laboratory officials and postgraduate students.
The workshop aimed to train workers on the use of microbiology and parasite laboratories and how to deal with the materials and microorganisms they contain.
The workshop, which was moderated by the chief engineer in the Basra Oil Company, Hassan Faleh Hindi, included illustrative lectures on training, guidance and occupational safety procedures under international laws, types of organisms and how to deal with them. He also touched on arrangements for biosafety management, health controls, types of laboratory hazards, how to design laboratories, principles of design and operation, laboratory equipment structure, as well as risk assessment and control, the definition of types of laboratory cabinets, the mechanism of use of each type and its efficiency, and finally the definition of microbiological safety tanks and the work of routine maintenance for them.
