The College of Dentistry at the University of Basrah held a scientific lecture on sickle cell anemia.
The lecture dealt with the causes of sickle cell disease, which has increased in prevalence recently in Basra Governorate, especially in Abu Al-Khasib area, and attributed the reason to the large number of consanguineous marriages that lead to inheriting anemia genes from parents to children.
The lecture mentioned the most important oral manifestations associated with anemia, such as mouth ulcers, gingivitis, osteitis, and atrophy of the taste papillae of the tongue.
The lecture aims at the need to take into account the patient's complete medical history to avoid complications resulting from the treatment of this disease.
