A research team at the College of Veterinary Medicine, consisting of Dr. Wasfi Aboud Al-Masoudi, Dr. Ali Belbol Al-Diwan, Dr. Basil Abdel-Zahra Abbas, Dr. Nawras Nouri Jaber, and Dr. Muhammad Hassan Khader, obtained a patent for preparing a new compound developed from the drug cephalexin with high biological activity as an antibiotic that is prepared for the first time.
The patent included the preparation of a new compound that was diagnosed using spectroscopic methods and accurate elemental analysis, and the analyzes proved the validity of the chemical composition of the new compound.
The antibacterial activity of a number of bacterial isolates was tested by PCR technique.
The new compound showed biological activity against two different types of bacteria, one Gram-positive, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and the other Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa, both of which were resistant to cephalexin in addition to its high activity against a number of other Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, the prepared derivative is considered as a new antibiotic.
