On Sunday morning, 30/10/2022, in the Department of geography and geographic information systems at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah, a master thesis entitled (Physical and chemical properties of the soil of the islands of Sinbad and Umm al-Rasas, a study in soil geography) was discussed.
The thesis presented by the student Khadija Abd Ali Shanan included three chapters.The first chapter discussed the natural and human factors affecting the soil of the study area , the second chapter included the physical properties of the soil of the study area, and the third chapter discussed the chemical properties of the soil of the study area.
The thesis aims to study the physical and chemical properties of the soil of the river islands (Sinbad and Umm al-Rasas), and then the possibility of cultivating it with an agricultural crop that fits those characteristics.
The study concluded:
1- The factors affected the determination of the features and characteristics of the soil of the two islamds, starting with the geographical location that reflects the characteristics of the place.
2- The impact of the water resources represented by the Shatt al-Arab on its continuous structural characteristics appears, through the influence of the Shatt al-Arab with the phenomena of tides and water share.
The study recommended:
1- Preserving the soil of the two islands by lifting the abuses that occurred on the soil of Sinbad Island and controlling or limiting this phenomenon.
2- Expanding future studies for the rest of the Shatt Al-Arab islands and comparing them with each other.
