PhD thesis at Basrah University to be discussed PhD thesis entitled (Enhanced biodegradation of hydrocarbons by bacteria in soil amended with organic and inorganic compounds) by the graduate student/ Doctorate (Satar Aziz Gmais). The study aims using readily accessible and inexpensive materials to speed up the biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons; to promote the capacity of indigenous oil-degrading bacteria and included isolation of bacteria capable of decomposing hydrocarbons from the soils of four oil sites in Basra. 16S rRNA was used to genetically identify the isolates. The study identified 15 bacterial isolates, and the isolates were screened to determine the most effective species to add to the soil through a bioaugmentation process to boost the biodegradation process, as well as the usage of organic and inorganic materials in the biostimulation process. and the study was concluded that coupling of Bioaugmentation and biostimution
was very effective to boost the biodegradation of hydrocarbons and the study recommended that organic and inorganic materials, fertilizers, and dispersants developed as the best biostimulation agents are being used in an attempt to put the findings of the study into practice in the field, and searching for inexpensive, readily available, and environmentally favorable organic and inorganic materials that promotes bacterial growth and consequently hydrocarbon biodegradation.
