The Department of Geology at the College of Science discussed a PhD thesis entitled (Hydrogeological and Morphotectonic Analysis of the Al-Batin Alluvial Fan, Southwestern Iraq). The researcher's thesis, Suad Aliwi Hassan Al-Bahadli, aims to study the hydrogeological, morphometric, and tectonic characteristics of the Al-Batin Valley to know the potential groundwater recharge areas for the purpose of drilling new wells in the future.
The study included field and laboratory work, where water samples were collected from 63 wells distributed in different regions, and chemical analysis was conducted for the purpose of knowing the suitability of water for drinking, agriculture, industry, and other uses.
The results revealed that the subsoil fan has 5 main basins, and in terms of morphometric analysis, the morphotectonics showed that the fan is tectonic and there is complete agreement between the direction of water flow and the distribution of lineaments.
The study recommends paving the way for these areas to facilitate access to them by removing remnants of war and mines, as well as developing and sustaining groundwater resources as the main source of agriculture in the region.
