The Pharmacology and Toxicology Department at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah organized a panel discussion entitled (Evaluating the potential preventive effects of citrus bergamot extract against nephrotoxicity caused by amikacin in male albino rats) with the participation of researchers and specialists.
The panel discussion included a lecture delivered by postgraduate master's student Fatima Fareed Dhari in which she explained the nephrotoxicity caused by the drug and is considered a major cause of kidney disease. Amikacin is considered one of the most potent aminoglycosides. However, its characteristic induction of nephrotoxicity presents a clinical problem, and great efforts have been directed towards reducing or prevent such dangerous kidney toxicity by using antioxidant supplements, especially those of natural origin, such as citrus fruits. Therefore, the aims of this study were to investigate the protective benefits of citrus bergamot extract in male rats with amikacin-induced acute kidney injury.
