
A workshop on dentists' skills, which was held by the College of Dentistry University of Basrah, for a period of three days, discussed the common mistakes of dentists during their discussions with patients and medicine based on the story.
Dr. Abd Al-Salam Salih, an expert in communication skills in the Ministry of Health, demonstrated eight mistakes that dentists make, including the dentists speaking in a hard medical language, which makes the patient feel confused, and the doctor talking about his skills which in reality, the dentist should speak In the language of results and solutions, not building trust with the patient, not listening to the patient, expressing sympathy with him and commitment to The patient after giving the treatment plan.
He stressed the Importance of the dentist learning verbal and non-verbal communication skills, which focus on the patient, to provide high-quality medical care, which includes the body position, the doctor’s movement, visual communication, tone of voice, speech intensity, receiving and welcoming the patient, active listening, giving the patient sufficient information about his illness, and Identifying the medical history of the patient.
Dr. Sawsan Issa discussed the suffering and (story-based medicine) and the Importance of medical dialogue between the patient and the doctor during the medical Interview in which the patient describes life while suffering from the disease and not just describing the disease itself.
Dr. Sawsan presented examples of medical cases stories to some patients, and asked the participants questions about how to deal with these stories, how the patient's suffering affected his daily life, his ability to fulfill his needs, what is the way the doctor can provide his assistance to the patient, and the results that the patient wants to obtain from the interview.
