A master's thesis was researched at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah (Evaluation of the potential protective effects of the kidneys and the anti-hyperlipidemia effects of citrus bergamot extract against amikacin toxicity in male white rats) for the postgraduate master's student Fatima Farid Dhari Jawad.
The thesis dealt with the use of aminoglycosides, such as amikacin, which is considered an effective antibiotic. However, it has been linked to unwanted renal toxicity, which leads to negative changes in various biochemical indicators, and this was reinforced by the presence of significant morphological changes in the kidneys.
The study also included an evaluation of the protective benefits of citrus bergamot extract in male rats with acute kidney injury caused by amikacin, in addition to its anti-hyperlipidemia effect.
The thesis concluded that the citrus bergamot extract was able to restore kidney function, accompanied by significant improvements in inflammatory indicators, oxidative stress indicators, as well as an improvement in the lipid profile, in addition to that, these data were proven by histological analysis of the kidneys.
