A PhD thesis at the University of Basra discusses (effective containment and the value system as predictors of delinquent behavior and their relationship to determinants of change among delinquent juveniles)
PhD thesis in the Department of Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance / College of Education for Human Sciences - University of Basra - Effective containment and the value system as predictors of delinquent behavior and their relationship to determinants of change among delinquent juveniles - by the student (Nada Razzaq Fadel)
The thesis dealt with identifying the research problem, which is summarized in answering the following questions:
Can delinquent behavior be predicted in light of the variables of effective containment and the value system?
- Is there a relationship between the variables of effective containment, the value system, and the variable of determinants of change?
The thesis aims to identify each of (effective containment, the value system, and determinants of change) in the research sample of delinquent juveniles. It also seeks to know the possibility of each of the variables (effective containment and the value system) to predict delinquent behavior. effective and value system) and variable determinants of change. In order to transfer these goals into practice, the researcher adopted four hypotheses that sought to verify their validity using the usual scientific methods.
The research reached the following results:
- The results of the current research showed that the sample of delinquent juveniles enjoyed effective containment in general, but the largest percentage was in favor of juveniles who had external containment.
- The results indicate that the respondents were more in favor of the instrumental values compared to the purposive values on the scale of the value system.
- The differences were statistically significant between the arithmetic means and the hypothetical mean for the domains of "reflective representation and cognitive inconsistency", while the differences were not statistically significant for the domain of "dissatisfaction with oneself" in the measure of the determinants of change.
- The results of the logistic regression analysis indicate that delinquent behavior can be predicted through the variables of effective containment and the final value system, while it is not possible to predict delinquent behavior through the variables of effective containment and the instrumental value system.
- The results of the correlation revealed that there is a positive and statistically significant correlation between the variables of effective containment and the "instrumental-definitive" value system, and the variable of determinants of change. This reflects the existence of a direct relationship between the three variables, which indicates that any increase in the scores of the sample members on the two scales of effective containment and the scale of value system in its two fields is accompanied by a similar rise on the scale of determinants of change and vice versa.
In the light of these results, the researcher presented a number of recommendations and proposals, the most important of which was encouraging the scientific research movement in the field of juvenile delinquency and urging the official authorities of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Justice to open the door for cooperation and facilitate the tasks of researchers to complete their research and facilitate their research tasks. Directing counseling and guidance centers and the media to hold awareness seminars for adolescents in middle and secondary schools concerned with monitoring the causes of delinquency and ways to prevent it within their preventive plans and programmes.
