The Department of Geology at the College of Science discussed a master's thesis entitled (Sedimentary Characteristics of the Al-Hartha Formation in the Majnoon Oil Field, southern Iraq). The researcher Sawsan Rahim Abd's thesis aims to identify the fine facies and transformational processes in addition to studying some petrophysical characteristics of the Hartha Formation in the Majnoon oil field.
The study included the study of samples from the door and rock fragments by 60 micro slides under a polarizing microscope and conducting XRD analyzes for thirty-seven samples. The study concluded that the formation consists of six primary facies (Crystalline dolomite), Packstone, Grainstone, Bounstone, (Wackestone, and Mudstone), with a number of secondary facies, and that the formation was deposited within the environments of the carbonate slope, and it was subjected to many transformational processes. The results revealed that the formation was deposited within the environments (intertidal, coastal, reserved marine waters, open sea, lagoon and the outer slope environment). The study recommends studying the formation in a broader manner by using core models from several wells distributed over different areas of the formation in the studied field, if available.
