A master's thesis at the College of Law at the University of Basrah discussed protection from domestic violence.
The thesis presented by the researcher Sarah Moayed Selim included that domestic violence crimes are among the most dangerous acts committed within the family and pose a great danger to both the family and society, as it disintegrates the family and society as well as the dire effects left by committing such acts not only on the victim, but those effects extend to include all members of the family.
The danger of domestic violence lies in the fact that it is not like other forms of violence with direct results linked to specific goals. Rather, its indirect results resulting from unequal power relations within the family and in society in general.
The thesis showed that there is no single explanation for domestic violence, but there are many factors that lead to it, according to what has been made clear by social theories, as it also states that the social environment has a major role in creating criminal behavior, and through these social theories, we can make a criminal policy to combat domestic violence.
