A master's thesis was researched in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Basrah (modification of homologous chemical structures of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and evaluation of biological activity) for postgraduate student Ahmed Muhammad Abdel-Wahed Jassim.
The study dealt with the use of ibuprofen as a raw material and the conversion of carboxylic acid in its ibuprofen formula to 1,2,4-triazol-3-thiol linked Schiff bases and measuring the biological effectiveness of the compounds that were synthesized.
Also, eight new compounds containing Schiff bases were synthesized, and the formation of the compounds was detected in the correct manner by using FT-IR, ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR, MS spectroscopy analyzes. The results confirmed that the compounds were formed in the correct manner.
The thesis concluded that the Schiff bases constituent compounds were measured for their biological effectiveness against tumor necrosis factor-alpha and comparing the results with ibuprofen, and the results were that the new compounds showed excellent results against inhibition of tumor necrosis factor-alpha in comparison with ibuprofen
