On Thursday morning, 3/16/2023, a master's thesis, entitled (the impact of climate change on the recurrence of the freezing phenomenon in Iraq), was discussed in the Department of Geography and Geographical Information Systems at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah.
The thesis presented by the student, Rana Abbas Hamza, included seven chapters. The first chapter discussed the theoretical framework, the second chapter discussed the change of some elements of the climate of Iraq for the period 1968-2021, the third chapter dealt with the change in the recurrence of the freezing phenomenon in Iraq for the period 1968-2021, the fourth chapter focused on the change in the number of days of the freezing phenomenon in Iraq for the period 1968-2021, the fifth chapter dealt with changing the frequency and number of days of degrees of freezing categories in Iraq for the period 1968-2021, the sixth chapter examined the change in the frequency and number of days of surface systems for the level (1000) hPa which leads to the phenomenon of freezing in Iraq for the period 1968-2021, and the seventh chapter showed the change in the frequency and number of days of the upper systems of the two levels (850 and 500) hPa, which leads to the freezing phenomenon in Iraq for the period 1968-2021.
The thesis aims to identify the monthly and seasonal changes that occurred in the frequency and number of days of the freezing phenomenon in Iraq for the period 1968-2021, and to show the changes that occurred in the pressure systems at the levels 1000, 850 and 500 hPa, which are constituent and associated with the phenomenon of freezing.
The thesis concluded that the climatic changes that occurred in the climate of Iraq affected the decrease in the frequency and number of days of the freezing phenomenon in Iraq for the period 1968-2021. The study also found that there are changes in the frequency and number of days of the pressure systems for the levels of 1000, 850 and 500 hPa, which are constituent and associated with the phenomenon of freezing in Iraq.
