
Basrah University celebrated the fifty-sixth anniversary of its founding with a large academic and official presence.
The central ceremony, which was held in the courtyard of the Central Public Library, included reciting speeches and poems that on the love of our country, urging the quest for knowledge, and recalling the history of the University of Basrah since its founding in 1964 and its independence from the University of Baghdad in 1967, and the opening of the permanent exhibition of books, which included various human and scientific disciplines and handicraft exhibitions, the proceeds of which were allocated to orphaned children
The President of the University, Prof. Dr. Saad Shaheen Hammadi, said, "We congratulate the Islamic nation on the holy month of Ramadan, and we congratulate our generous university, professors, employees, and students on their fifty-sixth anniversary. The past year witnessed many distinguished scientific outputs and patents that serve the community, which was the result of openness to government departments such as health, the environment, schools, prison corrections, orphanages and the elderly, in addition to the university's attainment of advanced ranks in international rankings”.
Shaheen added - “We call on our students to invest their time in studying, as it is a part that will not be repeated in life again, to present the fruit of that effort to their country in particular and to humanity in general, and to devote their free time to developing scientific research to serve their community”.
He continued, “We hope that every professor, employee, and student will leave an imprint and an impact that will be followed in the university, which will make the coming generations so proud”.
The University of Basrah will witness during this week the establishment of many entertainment, scientific and cultural events to celebrate its founding anniversary within a pre-prepared weekly curriculum.
It is noteworthy that the University of Basrah was founded on the first of April of the year (1964), and studies began in it with four main colleges, which are the College of Science, Arts, Engineering and Economics. That year witnessed the admission of about (816) male and female students.
During the years of its life, the university developed a lot, becoming one of the beacons of science and knowledge and a center for scientific research throughout Iraq, and it now has about (21) specialized colleges containing (83) scientific departments with a precise specialization, and about (16) specialized research centers, and it manages about (11) consulting offices, granting various academic degrees such as bachelor, higher diploma, master and PhD degrees in various scientific and human specializations.
