The Department of Geology, College of Science, discussed a master's thesis entitled (Evaluation of Pollution by Heavy Elements and Cyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soil, Plants, and Groundwater in the City of Zubair, Southern Iraq). The researcher's thesis, Sajjad Wafaa Jafarali, aims to assess the levels of pollution with heavy elements (toxic elements) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the soil, water and plants in the Zubair region, and to identify the sources of pollution in the Zubair region.
The results revealed that the heavy elements Pb, Ni, Zn, Cd and As contain a high concentration in the soil and C.lancifolius samples collected from different locations in the city of Zubair contain high levels of the elements Cr and Fe in all stations and the results of the study It showed a significant rise in the concentrations of total dissolved salts, due to the nature of the rock formations that store groundwater.
The study recommends avoiding the establishment of oil refineries and refining facilities near cities and densely populated areas, conducting health and epidemiological studies of the population around the study area in order to estimate the incidence of cancer-causing and non-carcinogenic diseases due to toxic elements.
