On Sunday morning 5/14/2023, a master thesis entitled (reproductive behavior and its determinants in the city of Basra, a study in population geography) was discussed in the Department of Geography and Geographic Information Systems at the College of Arts at the University of Basrah.
The thesis presented by the student Dalal Rahim Aziz included four chapters. The first chapter discussed the theoretical evidence , the second chapter dealt with two topics (the first topic discussed the population characteristics of the city of Basra, while the second topic studied demographic variables and their impact on reproductive behavior),the third chapter included two topics (the first topic dealt with social determinants, while the second topic included economic determinants),and the fourth chapter dealt with the first topic in it the future of reproductive behavior, and the second topic about reproductive health.
This study aims at the starting point of the role of reproductive as one of the variables of population growth and its association with inflation, or the disability of the population, as well as the results of the population’s interaction and behavior with the regulation or launch of procreation, which comes in a manner that coincides with, or contradicts with the adoption of population policies indicative of that behavior. This study aims to analyze the reproductive behavior in the city of Basrah through a number of determinants that affect it directly or indirectly and its spatial variation and the variables explaining this variation and in the light of these objectives, this study comes to answer the following questions:
1. What are the general features of reproductive behavior in the city of Basra.
2. What are the determinants that have a clear influence on reproductive behaviour.
3. What is the nature of the spatial variation of reproductive behavior prevailing in the city of Basra.
4. Is the gender preference and bias for procreation related to reproductive behaviour.
5. Do the desires and intentions of future spouses influence reproductive behavior in the city of Basra.
The thesis concluded:
1_ It was found through the study that reproductive behavior is affected by demographic, economic and social determinants, and in light of the impact of each of them, whether directly or indirectly, on levels of reproduction.
2_ The study showed that the common educational level in the city had an impact on those with a bachelor degree, which occupied 18.5% for husbands, and for a preparatory certificate, 18.5% for wives. The marital relationship, followed by the lowest levels of education, and therefore the educational status obtained by the husband and wife has an impact on reproductive behavior, which decreases with the increase of those levels.
